In a press conference held today in the RONACHER, designated artistic director Christian Struppeck announced that the Broadway musical LEGALLY BLONDE, which has received 11 awards, will have its German premiere in the RONACHER in February 2013. The musical SISTER ACT, which is currently successfully running in the RONACHER and which has been prolonged until the end of the year, has already had an audience of more than 175,000. The final performance will be held on 31st December 2012.
Struppeck: „ I am particularly proud to present the German premiere of this internationally successful musical in Vienna, following productions in New York, London and Sydney. The musical has already received many awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award for the „Best New Musical“. The show offers high quality entertainment and is intelligent, funny and fast paced.”
The musical, which is based on the 2001 Hollywood comedy with Reese Witherspoon in the leading role and on the novel of the same name by Amanda Brown, was first performed in the Palace Theatre, Broadway in 2007. After over 600 performances in New York it was exported to the West End in London in 2010, where until April 2012 it ran highly successfully at the Savoy Theatre with over 1,000 performances. LEGALLY BLONDE will celebrate its premiere in Sydney in the autumn of 2012.
Thomas Drozda, director general of the VEREINIGTEN BÜHNEN WIEN on Struppecks decision: „ I am thrilled at how quickly artistic director Christian Struppeck has mobilised his network before he has even taken on his new position, in order to land the German premiere of this first internationally successful show. With LEGALLY BLONDE, Struppeck is focussing on entertainment, as a counterpoint to the dramatic material in ELISABETH.”
With much wordplay and charm, LEGALLY BLONDE tells the story of the American college blonde Elle Woods, who goes to Harvard in order to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III, who is going there to study law. While she is there, Elle develops into an intelligent and emancipated law student. With her down-to-earth self-confidence and her big heart, she proves that outer appearances can often mislead. The music and lyrics were written by the Broadway acclaimed duo Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin. The script, which is full of witty wordplay and ludicrous punch lines, was written by Heather Hach.
Preparations in Vienna are already running at full speed. Contract agreements with the internationally renowned leading team will be signed shortly. The translation of the piece will begin soon in order to have a German version ready by the end of the summer. Auditions will already start in mid-May. Advance ticket sales will begin in the autumn of 2012.
