The Phantom of the Opera - Gala Concert
In November, the VBW Orchestra celebrates its 25th anniversary with a very special gala concert performance of the world’s most famous musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, at the RONACHER in Vienna. This concert also marks the start of a new concert series of the very highest quality.
24 years after the VBW staged the German-language premiere in Vienna, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA returns to the city in a concert version on 29 November, 2012. The musical, which has been seen by over 130 million people worldwide in more than 27 countries and has already won over 50 of the most important international theatre awards, is considered the most successful musical of all time. The gala concert presents the new, expanded orchestration for 45 musicians that Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber himself created for the 25th anniversary performance of the musical at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2011. The concerts will be conducted by VBW music director Koen Schoots; responsible for stage direction will be Andreas Gergen, Opera Director of Landestheater Salzburg. The gala concerts will be in German and a total of ten performances are planned.
Start of the Concert Series ‘Musicals in Concert’
The Vienna performance will be the high point of the concerts in the winter of 2012 and will also get the new concert series initiated by artistic director Christian Struppeck and entitled ‘Musicals in Concert’ off to a dazzling start. This series will see the VBW’s unique orchestra perform international musical highlights in concert form.
Christian Struppeck: “I genuinely feel enormously honoured to be able to mark the 25th anniversary of our orchestra by staging a concert version of this masterpiece under exclusive licence. With over 10,000 performances on Broadway and in the West End respectively, the show is considered the most successful musical of all time and also ran successfully for many years in Vienna. I really am looking forward tremendously to this very special project, and to further concerts with our top-class orchestra as well, of course.”
The orchestra of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien is internationally acclaimed for its outstanding quality, and not just by musical aficionados. Founded in 1987 in Vienna by artistic director Prof. Peter Weck together with the then music director, Caspar Richter, the VBW Orchestra has been led by current music director Koen Schoots since 2010 and has an impressive back-catalogue of productions, CD recordings and successful concert series in Austria and other countries to its name, and boasts among its ranks musicians from every conceivable genre.
Auditions for the cast of the concert series will begin shortly, and the names of the singers will be announced in the autumn.
